Israel’s settlers are a diverse group that includes radicals, ideologically motivated conservatives who seek recognition, and non-ideological individuals who act out of financial motives. Although some killers have come from the inner circle of the Ashkenazi community, Yigal Amir (a mizrachi Jew who assassinated Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin) and Baruch Goldstein (an American immigrant who killed 29 worshipping Muslims) were both marginal fundamentalists who came from the movement’s ethnic fringes rather than its core.
