Manal al-Natour analyzes the nonviolent strategies that Syrian women applied to contest, challenge, and survive multiple oppressions. Informed by Patricia Collins’ black feminist analysis of oppression, which utilizes the lens of intersectionality, she compares intellectuals’ activism to those who were compelled by practical reasons to fight injustice in Syria. More specifically, this essay explores how women employed different nonviolent approaches in their resistance, some gaining consciousness of nonviolent ideology and feminism, others applying practical tactics in response to injustice.
