Setting the Stage
Innovation, the Current Crisis, and Police Body-Worn Cameras
This chapter lays a foundation for the rest of the book by placing BWCs in the larger context of cameras in policing. The chapter reviews the explosion of interest in BWCs, largely as a result of the crisis in police legitimacy that emerged after the summer of 2014. This chapter provides an overview of the claims made about the impact and consequences of BWCs and summarizes the research on those claims. This chapter also provides an overview for the remaining chapters and reviews the primary takeaways from the book.
