This chapter argues that a psychological approach to climate change law and policy may be helpful in increasing our ability to effectively understand, predict, and shape human behavior regarding climate change. This approach requires reviewing the basic science of climate change; evaluating the psychology of climate change by developing an understanding of people’s perceptions, motivations, and cognition regarding climate change; and recognizing the distinctive psychology of the key climate strategies of mitigation, adaptation, geoengineering, and inaction.
