It has been a half century since Robert Bellah published “Civil Religion in America,” and in that time much has changed regarding the religious, cultural, social, and political reality of America. This volume brings together an interdisciplinary group of scholars who examine the usefulness of the concept as Bellah articulated it, analyze the ways in which the idea of civil religion has been and can be amended, and apply its perspective to both recently past and current events.
