This chapter situates Khmer Rouge extremism within the larger historical context from which the movement emerged and gained power and interrogates the colonial and post-colonial conditions that accounted not only for the desire for apocalyptic change, but for the form and tenor that it acquired. It charts the shifts and turns of the Cambodian communist movement in the post-independence period, including its progressive radicalization. Through thick description and a textured discussion of pre-war Cambodian society, the chapter examines the conditions that both sparked and stymied revolutionary impulse in pre-war Cambodia, at least until the onslaught of war in the early 1970s.
