This chapter describes the partners interviewed for the study and provides detailed information about them, including the range and average age of the study participants, how long on average the couples had been together, and their educational and employment backgrounds. All details, including class of origin, race, ethnicity, religion, and nationality are tabulated in the List of Participants at the end of the book. The chapter then tells the stories of four particular couples, illustrating the rich diversity of these intercultural relationships and introducing readers to key issues in the couple partners' lives that will be considered at length in the chapters that follow.
