Drawing on the antebellum and wartime writings—including compositions, diaries, editorials, and letters—of more than twenty students from four New England schools (Amherst, Bowdoin, Dartmouth, and Harvard), this chapter examines the relationship between the righteousness of the values demonstrated in the history of the North (or, more specifically, New England) and the students' responses to the sectional conflict. Their section's history, they believed, provided the true narrative for the nation's past. They also demonstrated their interest in national debates by participating in political campaigns throughout the period. In many cases, the social and intellectual environment that pervaded New England colleges before and during the conflict continued to influence them after they graduated and went on to their professional positions in northern society.
