The Post-Soviet Recoil to Periphery
The Post-Soviet Recoil to Periphery
This chapter seeks to identify the reasons for the collapse and transformation of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) and examines how this affected the nation's economy. Reconstructing the historical genealogies of Russian state and society shows that Russia has long pursued both geopolitical power and standing as one of the world's great societies. The nation has pursued these goals while maintaining uneasy relationships with capitalist European countries flanking it in the west; and while the crisis of communism transformed this dynamic, it did not bring it to an end. Twenty years after the fall of communism, Russian elites found themselves searching for a better position in the world division of labor. The chapter also argues that the transformation of the USSR facilitated the intensification of neoliberal globalization.
