“The New Man” (1921)
“The New Man” (1921)
This chapter describes the ideal Russian citizen who can rebuild his country after the war has passed. This “new man” is described as intrepid, with a penchant for economic materialism and for practical affairs in general. The new man is frequently contrasted with the old intelligentzia, who, to the new man, is a group of bourgeois monopolists who on the shoulders of the people, attained to heights of knowledge and experiences sorely needed for the workmen's republic. The chapter proposes that the new man, who is both intellectual yet humble and close to the ordinary workman, can form a new intelligentzia from the schools and training grounds left behind by the old. The individuals who will graduate from these schools can then step up to become the new leaders of Russia.
