“Rebellion Raged within Me” (memoir; 1948)
This chapter shows how the immigrant experiences of Lucy Lang—who would later become an anarchist and advisor to the president of the American Federation of Labor—would eventually lead her toward the path of labor activism. Born in Ukraine, Lang immigrated to the United States at the age of nine, and there encountered the indomitable matriarch, Lang's Aunt Yente Chave, who stood for morality and virtue within their immigrant community. Lang faced poverty as well as labor injustice, even as she sought to educate herself and lift herself up from the constraints of her immigrant life. She would eventually be inspired to rebel—against Yente Chave and against anything else that would stand in the way of freedom.
