“For That, We Found Time” (interview; 1965)
This chapter contains an excerpt from an interview conducted with Pauline Newman, the first female organizer for the ILGWU and a leading member of the New York Women's Trade Union League. In it, she describes her path to self-education. Her efforts entailed Saturday night English lessons and visiting meetings and lectures, and she notes that plenty of her books and study materials had tackled subjects that were of particular interest to her, which helped to maintain her interest in educating herself. Furthermore, the social connections she had forged during those meetings and societies she had attended provided her with even more avenues for education. She also discusses the difficulties she underwent in her attempts to self-educate.
