NYU Press

This chapter is a speech by Isadore (Paul) Bernick, a member of the Communist Party's Young Pioneers, to the party's Youth Week Assembly shortly before his expulsion in the 1930s. In it, Bernick urges his fellow party members to educate themselves in order to understand their social conditions and make themselves capable for the task of building upon the work of their predecessors. Likewise, the youth must train their bodies as well, that they may endure to help build a society based on the party's ideals. Bernick also addresses the parents, teachers, and other adults in the audience, urging them of their crucial role in guiding and educating the so that they can “keep on the right track” and learn from experiences—that of their elders' and their own.
