This chapter narrates the experiences of Emma Goldman, one of America's most famous proponents of anarchist thought, upon her arrival in New York on 1889 and her subsequent meetings with fellow anarchists in the area. Concurrent with these events is the tragedy at Chicago's Haymarket Square in 1886, in which a number of police officers and demonstrators died at an anarchist-led demonstration. The stories of these demonstrators had left an impression on Goldman, though it was not until she had come across a copy of Die Freiheit, a German paper edited by Johann Most—the foremost leader of the anarchist movement in New York during the 1880s and 1890s—that she would be swept into the activist movement herself.
