Louis Waldman

NYU Press

This chapter explores the difficulties of being a socialist candidate on Election Day, as seen from the experiences of labor lawyer Louis Waldman. It recounts the difficulties of securing a polling area in the East Side, a district rife with poverty and, more alarmingly, gangsters, who act as both assistance and impediment to Waldman's campaigns on different occasions. Waldman also muses on the political minutiae that crop up at the last minute during elections, the political rivalries forged in the days leading up to the elections, as well as the political partnerships he would form during this period, such as the “Second Avenue University”—a collective of lecturers and educators who would become street-corner speakers on the subjects of philosophy, history, politics, economics, the science of government, literature, and art.
