(p.1) 1 Clients and Lawyers
This chapter examines how a group of legal services lawyers and clients understand the work they do together on issues of individual importance to clients as well as those related to broader notions of social justice. Focusing on Northeast Legal Services (NELS), a nonprofit legal services organization based in Northeast City, the chapter considers how clients and lawyers articulate some alternative vision of social justice and denounce the workings of a system they perceive to be unjust. After providing a historical background on NELS, the chapter discusses the emergence of a different kind of lawyering aimed at effecting social change. It also explores “bread-and-butter” legal services practice for the poor, along with power and resistance that are manifest in relationships between lawyers and clients. Finally, it provides an overview of the succeeding chapters.
