This chapter examines the impact of minority status on the experiences of adolescents. Adolescents often identify as members of specific racial or ethnic groups, religious groups, or other types of groups, and in some cases labels derived from visible characteristics are attributed to them. Division by label advantages some and disadvantages others. Increased cognitive development will allow adolescents to comprehend fully that different external physical or social characteristics do not mean a different set of internal dynamics. All individuals develop in the same sequence and grow up by similar routes regardless of race, ethnicity, and religion. This chapter considers the pragmatic realities that professionals must address when it comes to dealing with minority adolescents, along with the role of minority parents in helping their adolescent children cope with issues of growth and comparison as well as prejudice and discrimination.
