(p.1) Introduction
This book examines how the law can enhance the lives of people with an intersex condition. It considers whether legal challenges can be effective in helping the intersex movement achieve its goals. It explores whether the intersex movement can form mutually beneficial alliances with other social justice movements and adopt the legal strategies they have used to effectively challenge discriminatory practices. The book is divided into three parts. Part I discusses the medical practices that attempt to eliminate evidence of intersexuality by surgically altering infants so that they conform or blend into a medically created definition of normal genitalia. Part II outlines areas in which the concerns of people with an intersex condition and the concerns of transsexuals may converge. Part III focuses on how the intersex movement can most effectively frame legal arguments and build alliances with other progressive social justice movements to help advance its objectives.
