This chapter examines the relationship between workplace fairness and organizational deviance. Research shows that when individuals are treated unjustly, they tend to retaliate by harming others. One study surveyed 167 manufacturing workers, in which those who felt that their jobs lacked fair outcome (distributive justice), fair allocation policies (procedural justice), and fair interpersonal treatment (interactional justice) were more likely to report engaging in a number of retaliatory behaviors. Thus, such employees may sometimes make self-serving judgments as to the merits of their own positions, judge the morality of other people harshly, as well as seek revenge when they observe inappropriate conduct.
