Strength through Diversity
Sukkot
This chapter describes the celebration of Sukkot. The event is a festivity for the harvest that hark back Jews to the tenuous nature of mortality, the ancient Israelites' long journey through the desert, as well as God's sukkah of peace. As a reminder of the breadth and diverse nature of our harvest, Jews decorate themselves with gourds, grapes, pumpkins, and corn, with cranberries, apples, squash, and flowers. This celebration of nature's diversity encourages people to rejoice in the multiplicity of human gender—including LGBT. As such, the event invites everyone who has worked toward a more accepting world, and has challenged our society's “traditional” family structure to rejoice for gender diversity.
