This chapter examines schools as contexts for sociopolitical development. Can the kinds of learning environments common in youth organizing and participatory action research take root inside school classrooms? This question is important for developing new forms of democratic education in schools and theorizing sociopolitical learning processes. The chapter draws on research from the Critical Civic Inquiry (CCI) project to explore this question, focusing on the experiences of CCI teachers. The CCI teachers showed that academic rigor and action civics go hand in hand. Even in the most behaviorally strict urban middle schools, they carved out space for dialogue with students and experiential learning. Their work demonstrated the promise of public schools as sites for young people to develop as political actors and contribute to change in the climate and policies of their schools.
