Abstract
This book explores the politics of public policy and how it sometimes engenders sex work, as well as ethnography's potential contribution to sex work policy. Drawing on ethnographic accounts from diverse geographical and cultural regions, it documents an often sharp disconnect between policy and its practice with regards to sex workers. In particular, it examines what accounts for the striking parallels and patterns at work in the lives of individual sex workers in a variety of cultural contexts and how ethnographies of the sexual labor of women, children, and men might help improve public policy on sex work. The book also considers how the pervasive global reach of neoliberal ideologies and practices permeates both public policy and the worldview of sex workers. Finally, it offers concrete recommendations for improving policy across municipal, state, and national lines, and in particular calls for sex work policy that is evidence-based rather than informed by cultural, moral, and other ideological values.
