This chapter explores the stories of evangelicals who built their homes in Palestine, trying to help the Jews settle there and to positively affect the Jews' opinions and agendas. The American colony in Jerusalem is best understood in the context of similar developments in religion and communal life in America. The Colony's founders and those who joined the commune in its first decades made a deliberate choice to live there and accepted the group's practices and norms on their own accord. Yet, they were only partially able to transfer their values to their children, and a rebellion against the community's regulations took place, such that norms and practices were either modified or ignored. While the commune disbanded half a century after its establishment, its influence on all spheres of life in the city was remarkable. Evangelicals in Palestine looked upon the Jews as the people responsible for building an infrastructure that would serve as precursor to Christ's kingdom.
