This chapter focuses on the Democratic Party’s (DP) participation in the Albanian elections of 1991 and 1992. It first considers the United States’ response to the DP’s nationalist rhetoric about Albanians in other lands, along with negotiations on Albania–U.S. diplomatic relations. It then examines Albanian Americans’ attitude towards the DP, Sali Berisha’s role in the party, and the DP’s campaign for the elections set by the government of Ramiz Alia on March 15, 1991. It also discusses the results of the elections, which saw the Party of Labor win just more than two-thirds of the vote and the DP take slightly less than one-third. Finally, it looks at the United States’ support for the DP in the second elections held on March 22, 1992.
